An Overview of Your Visit
We understand that seeking support, especially during times of trauma, loss, or uncertainty, can feel overwhelming. Whether you're here for healing, advocacy, or clarity, Lori’s Place offers a safe, welcoming space where adults can receive compassionate care without judgment.
Unlike services for children, adult clients do not need a referral from law enforcement or the Department of Child Services. You can reach out directly to schedule a visit, and we’ll walk with you through every step of the process.
Arrival & Welcome
Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by a trained advocate who will guide you through your visit. Our advocates specialize in supporting individuals who have experienced trauma and are here to help you feel comfortable and informed. They’ll explain what to expect, assist with any paperwork, and connect you with resources such as counseling, housing support, or food assistance if needed. You’re encouraged to ask questions at any time.
Support Services
Depending on your needs, your visit may include:
- A private conversation with an advocate to explore your goals and concerns.
- Access to mental health screenings to help identify areas where additional support may be beneficial.
- Referrals to community resources for ongoing care, legal support, or wellness services.
All services are trauma-informed and tailored to your unique situation. You are never required to participate in any service that doesn’t feel right for you.
Forensic Interview (If Applicable)
If a forensic interview is part of your visit, you’ll meet privately with a specially trained interviewer who understands how to speak with adults in a trauma-sensitive and respectful way. The interview provides a safe space for you to share your experience in your own words and is often used to support legal or investigative processes.
Your advocate will explain the purpose of the interview beforehand and answer any questions you may have. The interview is conducted in a private, secure setting, and your dignity and autonomy are always prioritized.
Meeting with the Investigative Team (If Applicable)
If your visit is connected to an ongoing investigation, you may have the opportunity to meet with professionals such as law enforcement or legal advocates. These team members may observe the forensic interview and will meet with you afterward to discuss next steps, answer questions, and provide clarity about the process moving forward.
This portion of the visit is optional and only occurs when relevant to your case.
Medical Exam (If Applicable)
If a medical exam is part of your visit, it will be conducted by a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) who is specially trained to work with adult survivors in a trauma-informed and compassionate way. The exam is gentle, non-invasive, and focused on your health and well-being. The exam also offers an opportunity to collect forensic evidence which may be used to support legal or investigative processes should you choose to seek legal action. You’ll have the opportunity to speak directly with the nurse, ask questions, and share any concerns.
You are welcome to have a support person, such as a trusted friend, loved one, or advocate, with you during the exam if that helps you feel more comfortable.
Mental Health Screening & Support
Before you leave, your advocate and peer support specialist will check in with you to answer any remaining questions and offer a brief mental health screening if appropriate. This helps us better understand how you're coping and what additional support might be helpful.
You’ll leave with a clear plan, resources, follow-up contacts and the reassurance that you’re not alone.
Our Commitment to You
At Lori’s Place, we are committed to creating a safe, respectful, and healing environment for every adult who walks through our doors. Your privacy is protected, and confidentiality is maintained throughout your experience. All services are provided completely free of charge.
Everything we do is centered around your comfort, dignity, and well-being because you deserve to feel supported, heard, and cared for.
Forensic Interviews at Lori’s Place
At Lori’s Place, a forensic interview may be part of your visit if you're involved in a legal or investigative process related to trauma, abuse, or victimization. This interview is a structured, trauma-informed conversation designed to gather information in a respectful, non-judgmental way.
It’s important to know that this is not an interrogation. You will be asked open-ended, non-leading questions in a safe, private setting. The goal is to provide you with a space where you can share your experience in your own words, at your own pace.
What to Expect
Our forensic interviews are conducted by professionals who are specially trained to speak with adults about sensitive topics. They understand the impact of trauma and prioritize your emotional safety throughout the process. You are never pressured to talk, and you can pause or stop the interview at any time.
To protect the integrity of the process, only members of the investigative team may observe the interview. This helps ensure the setting remains neutral and focused solely on your experience. You will be informed in advance about who may be observing and why.
Support During Your Interview
Before and after the interview, you’ll meet with an advocate who is there to support you. While they are not therapists, our advocates are compassionate professionals and trained peer support specialists who can:
- Answer your questions about the process.
- Listen to your concerns.
- Connect you with resources such as counseling, legal support, or crisis services.
If they don’t have an answer immediately, they’ll make sure to find someone who does.
After the Interview
Once the interview is complete, you may have the opportunity to speak with members of the investigative team, such as law enforcement or legal representatives, depending on the nature of your case. They can provide general information about next steps and answer any questions you may have.
Please keep in mind that the forensic interview is just one part of a broader investigation. Additional interviews or evidence collection may be necessary. If there is a suspect involved, they will be interviewed separately and never at Lori’s Place.
All information gathered during your interview will be shared with the appropriate legal authorities, such as the County Attorney, who will determine whether charges will be filed.
Ongoing Support
If you have questions at any point during the investigation or legal process, your advocate at Lori’s Place is here to help guide and support you. You are never alone in this process.
Medical Exams at Lori’s Place
At Lori’s Place, medical exams are conducted with compassion, dignity, and respect. These exams are designed to support your physical well-being and, when applicable, assist in the investigative process. While they may differ from routine medical visits, they are never invasive or rushed. Our goal is to ensure you feel safe, informed, and cared for throughout the experience.
What to Expect
Exams take place in a private, on-site exam room and are performed by Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs), registered nurses and nurse practitioners who are specially trained to work with adult survivors of trauma. These professionals use a trauma-informed approach that prioritizes your comfort, autonomy, and emotional safety.
Depending on your needs, the exam may include:
- A general health assessment.
- Testing and treatment for infections or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs/STIs).
- Forensic evidence collection (if applicable).
- High-resolution imaging using tools like the Cortexflo camera to document physical signs such as bruising or injuries that may not be visible to the naked eye.
You are always in control of what happens during the exam. Everything will be explained clearly, and you can decline any part of the process at any time.
Your Role and Support
Before the exam, you’ll have the opportunity to speak privately with the medical staff about your health history, the purpose of the exam, and any questions or concerns you may have. You are welcome to bring a support person with you if that helps you feel more at ease.
Our team is here to make sure you feel informed, supported, and heard, not just medically, but emotionally as well.
