Healing from Trauma During PTSD Awareness Month: You Are Not Alone

Each June, during PTSD Awareness Month, we take time to shine a light on an often invisible struggle carried by millions: the effects of trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. At Lori’s Place, we understand that trauma comes in many forms—whether it's sexual abuse, domestic violence, childhood neglect, or any other deeply painful experience. And while healing may look different for everyone, there’s one truth that guides our work: You are not alone.
Understanding PTSD
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. While many people associate PTSD with military combat, it is also very common among survivors of abuse. In fact, survivors of sexual abuse are significantly more likely to develop PTSD, often battling symptoms in silence for years.
PTSD doesn’t always look like what we see on TV. It might show up as:
-
Nightmares or flashbacks
-
Difficulty trusting others
-
Hypervigilance or anxiety in public spaces
-
Numbness or detachment
-
Shame or guilt
If this feels familiar, know that it’s not your fault—and more importantly, healing is possible.
Healing Is a Journey, Not a Deadline
At Lori’s Place, we believe healing is a journey made up of many small steps. It might begin with sharing your story for the first time, learning new coping tools in therapy, or simply walking through our doors and being met with compassion.
Some days might feel like setbacks. Other days, you may find strength you didn’t know you had. Every emotion is valid, and every survivor deserves to be met with patience and respect.
How Lori’s Place Supports Survivors
Our mission is to provide a safe, supportive space for survivors of trauma to begin or continue their healing journey. We offer:

You Are Not Alone
If you're reading this and carrying pain from the past, we want you to know:
-
You are believed.
-
You are not broken.
-
You are not alone.
Healing from trauma is not a straight line—but together, we can create a path forward. During PTSD Awareness Month and every day, Lori’s Place is here to walk beside you.
