Counseling Services

Healing from trauma can take time, and every person’s path forward looks different. Lori’s Place offers counseling services for children, teens, and young adults ages 2–25, providing a safe and supportive environment to process difficult experiences, develop healthy coping skills, and work toward healing.

Our counseling services provide structured, trauma-informed support rooted in established therapeutic theory and evidence-based practices. Counseling can help individuals understand how past experiences continue to affect their emotions, relationships, behaviors, and daily lives while developing tools that support long-term healing and well-being.

How Counseling Can Help

Counseling provides a more structured and intensive level of support for individuals who may benefit from working through trauma with a trained professional.

Depending on each person’s individual needs, counseling may focus on:

  • Processing past trauma and difficult experiences
  • Understanding thoughts, feelings, and behavioral responses
  • Developing healthy coping and emotional regulation skills
  • Building confidence, resilience, and self-awareness
  • Addressing the ongoing effects of trauma
  • Strengthening relationships and communication
  • Establishing goals that support continued healing and personal growth

Our approach recognizes that trauma can affect people differently at every age and stage of development. Services are designed to meet each individual where they are and provide an environment centered on safety, trust, compassion, and healing.

Counseling vs. Peer Support

Both counseling and peer support can play an important role in recovery, but they provide different types of support.

Counseling

Counseling is structured, more intensive, and rooted in therapeutic theory and evidence-based practice. It provides an opportunity to explore and process past trauma, understand its continuing impact, and work toward healing with professional therapeutic support.

Counseling may be especially helpful when past experiences continue to affect emotions, behaviors, relationships, or everyday life.

Peer Support

Peer support is less intensive and centered on connection, shared understanding, and lived experience.

Peer support specialists bring their own lived experiences to their work, creating a unique level of empathy and understanding. While peer support may reflect on experiences from the past and how they continue to affect the present, its primary focus is on developing effective coping strategies now and planning for the future.

The goal is to help survivors build motivation, confidence, and empowerment so that trauma does not define who they are or where they go next.

Counseling and peer support are different services, and each can provide valuable support depending on an individual’s needs and where they are in their healing journey.

Common Questions About Counseling at Lori’s Place

  • Who can receive counseling services?

Lori’s Place currently provides counseling services for children, teens, and young adults ages 2 through 25.

  • What is the difference between counseling and peer support?

Counseling is a structured therapeutic service grounded in theory and evidence-based practices. It can involve more intensive work focused on processing past trauma and supporting healing.

Peer support is based on connection with a specialist who brings lived experience, empathy, and understanding. It generally focuses more on coping effectively in the present, looking toward the future, and helping survivors build motivation and empowerment.

  • Does counseling only focus on past trauma?

Processing past trauma can be an important part of counseling, but counseling can also help individuals understand how those experiences affect their lives today. The goal is to support healing while developing skills and strategies that can improve emotional well-being moving forward.

  • How do I know whether counseling or peer support is right for me?

The right type of support depends on your individual needs. Someone looking for structured therapeutic support and an opportunity to process past trauma may benefit from counseling. Someone seeking connection, encouragement, practical coping strategies, and support from a person with lived experience may benefit from peer support.

Lori’s Place can help you better understand the available services and determine what type of support may fit your needs.
